Carling Cup and The Oscars

Congratulations to Birmingham City, winners of the first domestic Football Trophy of the season. They overcame the odds against a much fancied Arsenal team at Wembley Stadium running out 2-1 winners.
Neutral fans who were watching were treated to a fantastic end to end game with the woodwork being hit on several occasions by both teams. Nice scenes at the end when the Birmingham City players went up to collect their trophies and medals, it great to see one of the so called lower teams triumphing in a cup final.
Also the Oscars were awarded last night with The Kings Speech winning 4 Oscar awards including the main award Best Actor going to Colin Firth.

The BAFTA Awards 2011

This week, the hot topic that everyone is talking about is The BAFTA Awards. The film which has wowed audiences and critics alike is, without doubt, The King’s Speech. The film collected a grand total of seven BAFTAs, including best film and best British film. The BAFTA awards are generally seen to be an indicator of the results of the forthcoming Oscars, so it will be expected that The King’s Speech will triumph once again in a few weeks.

BAFTA was first established as the British Film Academy, back in1947. In 1958, they merged with the Guild of Television Producers and Directors to become the Society of Film and Television. This transposed into the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 1976, which is how we know it today. The BAFTA Awards are internationally recognised and have an eye-catching design. The gold design is based on a theatrical mask and was designed by Mitzi Cunliffe, an American sculptor.

Film, television and music awards are a great example of high profile awards and how trophies are still very relevant in the modern age. Awards stretch from one end of the scale to the other, with awards being given out to children at schools for academic and sporting achievements, to adults for outstanding work throughout their careers and right up to celebrities winning BAFTA awards and Oscars.

A Brief History of Trophies

Trophies have been awarded to acknowledge victories since ancient times. The word trophy is derived from the French trophée, meaning “a spoil of prize or war.” The English coined the word trophy in 1550. The ancient Greeks created trophies from arms and standards which had been captured from the enemy. These were then hung from a tree or stake to symbolise a warrior. The ancient Romans had a different approach to trophies, which was to build grand columns and arches above fountains.

Winners of the Olympic games in ancient Greece were awarded trophies in the form of laurel wreaths as well as an amphora containing sacred olive oil. There were a range of other awards which were given, such as a tripod vase, a bronze shield and a silver cup. Ancient Rome tended to give money to winners.

Chalices were a popular choice for trophies during the Middle Ages for sporting events. There is even a sterling cup on display in the Henry Ford Museum, which was awarded to the winner of a horse race which was a competition between two towns in 1699. This has extended to traditions today as the Davis Cup, Stanley Cup and a variety of World Cups.
